Social media platforms across Pakistan are facing disruption amid PTI's virtual fundraiser netblocks
Social media platforms throughout Pakistan are experiencing disruptions due to the PTI's virtual fundraising telethon, according to internet monitor Netblocks.
The agency reported a nationwide disruption to platforms such as X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Netblocks Director Alp Toker stated that this level of nation-scale social media targeting of political activities is rare, with Venezuela being another country known to employ similar measures. Last month, internet outages were also reported during a PTI virtual power show.
Despite users' complaints about the inability to access social media platforms and slow internet services, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) claimed that all social media networks were active and no complaints had been received.
The PTI condemned the internet shutdown as "absolutely shameful" and called for the resignation of the IT minister. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Pakistanis due to internet disruptions.
